BS8901 is the British Standard which has been developed specifically for the events industry with a purpose of helping the industry to operate in a more sustainable manner. The standard defines the requirements for a sustainable event management system to ensure an enduring and balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress relating to events.

The ICRT independent review said:

"SGS is one of the largest certification bodies in the world, and the standard they are certifying to BS8901, has been developed after considerable consultation and fulfilling with international standard development requirements. The extensive expertise of SGS staff in consulting, auditing and certifying to environmental standards was evident during the enquiries undertaken by the consultant. The documentary evidence, field audit and audit reports are thorough. However BS8901 is a young standard still open to much interpretation and the small number of companies that have been certified to it."
