Sustainable Tourism Eco-certification Programme (STEP) is the certification programme from Sustainable Travel International.

The ICRT independent review stated:

"Their services are thorough and companies engaging in the self assessment and third party assessment provide a level of depth that goes beyond their competitors. Their stepped system, allowing companies to start as “partners”, and progressively move towards certification means that each company can decide how far they want to go, and how much they want to invest. STEP benefits from the resourceful public relations and marketing systems behind Sustainable Travel International, that provide extensive media coverage of sustainability achievements. With less than 15 companies third party certified worldwide (three of them in the United Kingdom and Ireland), their programme has limited market penetration."

Please note STI have a number of programmes for businesses but STEP (sustainabletravelinternational.org/documents/sustainabletourismcertification_businesses.html) is the only certification scheme recognised by VisitEngland.
