Taking Part (DCMS) – Culture, Leisure and Sport Go

The 'Taking part' survey is commissioned by DCMS and its partner public bodies (Arts Council, English Heritage, Museums and Libraries Archive (MLA) and Sport England) to collect data about engagement and non-engagement in culture, leisure and sport – of relevance to tourism are aspects such as visits to historic environment sites, visits to museusm/galleries and archives, and engagement with the arts. 'Taking Part' is a continuous national survey, achieving an annual sample size of around 29,000 people.
Survey reports and an online analysis tool are available through the DCMS website.

Active People (Sport England) – Sport and Recreation Go

The Active People survey identifies how participation in sport and recreation varies from place to place and between different groups in the population.The survey also measures the proportion of the adult population that volunteer in sport on a weekly basis, club membership, involvement in organised sport/competition, receipt of tuition or coaching, and overall satisfaction with levels of sporting provision in the local community.

National Travel Survey (Department for Transport) Go

NTS is a household survey designed to provide a databank of personal travel information for Great Britain. The NTS has been running continuously since 1988, following previous ad hoc surveys. In 2009, data was collected from over 8,000 households.

The website includes a survey report and detailed data tables in excel. Of particular interest is the trip purpose information, which enables transport information for “holidays/day trips” to be analysed separately.

Heritage Counts

Heritage Counts (English Heritage) Go

Heritage Counts is an annual survey of the state of England’s historic environment. The national Heritage Counts report contains information on historic assets, historic assets at risk, planning consents, funding in the historic sector, employment and skills, and economic and social benefits (participation, volunteering, education, regeneration, community cohesion). The report also explores the role of the historic environment in wider social and economic agendas, covering a different theme each year. As well as a national report, separate reports are available for each of the country’s nine regions.

The Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment (MENE) is a new survey commissioned by Natural England, Defra and the Forestry Commission. The survey provides data on how people use the natural environment in England.
