Our Stay in the LEGOLAND Hotel by Yolanda Copes-Stepney
Over a thousand LEGO models, mini-figures, pirates, knights, Vikings, LEGO-shaped potatoes, a whoopie cushion carpet and of course, millions of pieces of LEGO. That’s LEGOLAND Windsor Resort, the most amazing place ever, according to my sister, brother, niece…and me!
The adventure began when we were stopped by a LEGO smoke-breathing dragon at the entrance. We made it past him (after several photos) and into the primary-coloured LEGO explosion that was the reception. Despite my efforts, I left my adulthood at the door and threw myself into a world of adventure and plastic multi-coloured bricks. The kids jumped straight in the trough of LEGO, while I checked us in with the LEGO, sorry I mean real receptionist with a LEGO mobile dangling overhead and little LEGO figures adorning the walls. This wasn’t overkill, this was a dream come true.
Pictures of Captain Brickbeard and walls adorned with treasure maps and gold coins made up our floor of the hotel. The theme continued into the bedrooms, which were decorated with skull and crossbones-patterned bedding and porthole-shaped mirrors.
As if being in a pirate room wasn’t exciting enough, there was also a treasure chest challenge which involved counting the amount of starfish, swords and gold coins in the carpet design so we could crack the code and unlock a whole heap of toys, sweets and goodie bags. After we'd taken pictures of every corner of the room and scoffed the sweets, we headed downstairs for dinner in the themed Bricks Family Restaurant.
The tables had crayons and the staff invited us to colour ours in while we waited for drinks. We left our newly decorated technicolour table and headed to the buffet, with a salad bar and soup station, a rotisserie and grill, “Live” cooking – oriental style, a carvery, a children’s section, a massive selection of desserts, an ice cream machine and my favourite part: a tower of cupcakes. How can I put this... We destroyed the buffet as though we had never seen food before.
My favourite bits were the brick-shaped potatoes and the icing bricks on top of the cakes. With our stomachs at bursting point, we headed over to our post-dinner performance. Pink Brick and her mini-figure character friends put on a very lively, interactive musical show full of fun and games. This was perfect for letting the kids drain all that cupcake-fuelled energy while my sister and I watched on from the Skyline Bar.
After all the excitement, it was back to our rooms for some swashbuckling stories before bed. The kids slept soundly dreaming of LEGO but I stayed up late constructing a LEGO mansion (the exact starting point of my LEGO addiction).
The next day, we got up super-early and headed back to Bricks for the breakfast buffet that included pancakes and waffles. It wasn’t compulsory to try everything on the buffet, but I’ve established we’re greedy, so let’s move on. We took advantage of our early entry to the park and navigated our way around the park from Adventureland, to Loki’s labyrinth, to waterworks to Star Wars mini land.
Staying at the hotel was the icing on the cake as we could go back and have our lunch in the Skyline Bar and the kids could carry on playing while we caught our breath before heading out again. We finished the day completely wiped out, soaking wet from the water rides and excited about playing with the mountains of LEGO we, sorry, I, bought and most of all, with smiles on our faces from the best weekend ever!
I am writing this from my LEGO fort. I have been trying to recapture the magic ever since but it’s not working. I’m just going to have to go back.
